Alpha Delta Business Consultants

Our Shih Tzu, Buddy, likes to watch DogTV, especially when the show is about large dogs (the bigger, the better) because he can bark and growl at them all he wants and they are unable to do anything about it. That makes him feel as big as they are. Unfortunately it does not work that way in business. When a Shih Tzu size business takes on a Doberman size business, they will need a much better strategy than loud barking. Is your company a noisy ShihTzu or a quiet but deadly Doberman? Alpha Delta Business Consultants have helped hundreds of Shih Tzu's become fierce competitors.

BUSINESS OWNER’S CHECKUP

Among successful business owners who have grown their companies in a controlled and planned way, there are a number of positive things they have in common. This owner’s checkup is a way for you, the company owner, to make your own assessment.
                                                                                                Yes                  No
1. If you have five or more employees, do you have:
A personnel policy manual
An incentive program based on performance
Job descriptions for all supervisors
A task list for hourly employees
Weekly measure of productivity

2. If you use inventory in your business, do you:
Know which items move the fastest
Know the margin for each product/service
Know how fast your inventory turns
Have a plan for phase-in/phase-out
Have an order quantity plan

3. If you regularly transport products with your own vehicles, do you have:
A route schedule
A preventative maintenance program
 Driver assigned to each vehicle
 Daily visual check

Exact cost per mile for each/all vehicles
Planned replacement based on upkeep cost

4. Certain accounting and financial actions are also important.

Do you know the status of your accounts payable every week
Take your trade discounts
Have a multiple-year budget
Have a monthly variable budget
Have an annual flexible budget
Update a cash flow weekly

5. Quality is important to all businesses.

Do you have a quality assurance plan
Know the cost of errors or redos
Know what quality your customers expect
Have you started ISO 9000 certification process
Providing quality without measuring the cost of quality

Use the following chart to grade the overall strength of your company.

                                                            YES                  NO
SECTION

1.                                                         +5                    -5
2.                                                         +5                    -5
3.                                                         +5                    -5

4.                                                         +5                    -5

5.                                                         +5                    -5
                        TOTAL SCORE

If your subtotal score in any section was more than 50% negative, you should seriously consider taking action soon to remedy the situation.  However, if your overall score was less than 50%, your company is unnecessarily at risk.

While it would take considerably more information to determine the cost to your company because of the negative factors that you have identified, there is unquestionable cost.  You or your CPA should be able to determine how much this cost is to your business. How to turn each negative into a positive can be more challenging, but necessary.
